Ahmedabad District is an important district in the central part of the state of Gujarat in the western part of India and is located on the banks of the Sabarmati River and is the largest city in the state. The administrative office of the District Panchayat is headquartered at 'Zilla Panchayat Bhavan' in the Lal Darwaja area of Ahmedabad city. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 4,13,8.
Mehsana, Sabarkantha and Gandhinagar districts are located on the northern boundaries of Ahmedabad district. Kheda district on the eastern boundary, Gulf of Khambhat and Bhavnagar district are on the southern boundary and Surendranagar district is on the western boundary.
History
One thousand years ago, a prosperous town called Ashaval existed. Ashaval was named after the king of Bhils named Asha. This town was a good town in North Gujarat from Patan and Khambhat. There were temples of Jains and Brahmins in Ashawal. Over time, the town became an important place in terms of trade and military tactics.
Sardar Patel jumped into the political arena from Ahmedabad.
Mahatma Gandhi established the Kocharab Ashram on the west bank of the river Sabarmati which is today known as Kasturba Ashram and another ashram in the Sabarmati area near Vadaj which is today known as Gandhi Ashram. During the British rule, Ahmedabad remained the headquarters of the Indian freedom struggle due to Gandhiji.
Gujarat University was established by Gandhiji in 190 in Ahmedabad.
Dr. Vikram Sarabhai grew up in Ahmedabad and Sarabhai industry developed in Ahmedabad.
With his help, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Textile Research Center (Atira) and Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) were established in Ahmedabad.
With the efforts and collaboration of industrialists like Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Lalbhai Dalpatbhai, Lalbhai Dalpatbhai College of Engineering (L.D. Engineering) and L.A. D. Arts colleges and other institutions established.
The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM) is the first institute of India and Asia located in Ahmedabad.
